The prevalence data shows the impact: left-handedness rates dropped sharply during peak suppression decades, then recovered as the practice ended. By the 1990s, rates had climbed back to the 10-12% baseline we see today.

This isn’t just historical trivia. It’s proof that handedness, while biological, can be hidden under enough pressure. The trait didn’t vanish—it went underground. Your left-handed grandfather might have written right-handed his whole adult life and never mentioned it.

2. Identical twins can have opposite handedness—which breaks the genetic story

If left-handedness were purely genetic, identical twins would always match. They share 100% of their DNA, after all. But about 15% of identical twin pairs have opposite handedness. One twin is left-handed; the other isn’t.

That single fact is a problem for the “it runs in families” narrative. Twin studies peg handedness heritability at only about 25%, which is low for a trait this visible.
